Where the car is locked matters

In Erie, the street you are parked on can change what happens next. The city's winter rules are aimed at keeping main routes clear.

• Article 512 (Snow Emergency), § 512.02, lets the city ban parking on snow emergency routes. The routes listed in § 512.13 include State and Peach Streets, East and West 6th, 12th, 26th and 38th Streets, Buffalo Road and East Lake Road.
• Section 512.04 requires a car stalled on a snow-covered emergency route to be towed or pushed off the roadway, and § 512.09 lets police remove vehicles parked or stalled on those routes.
• The city's winter guidance warns that a car left buried in the street may be towed.

Cold, heat and safety

A closed car turns cold in an Erie winter and dangerously hot on a summer afternoon. If a child or a pet is locked inside, call 911 first, whatever the season.

If the keys are locked in with the engine running, check that snow is not blocking the tailpipe; a blocked exhaust can push carbon monoxide into the cabin. Do not pull hard on a frozen handle or force a key into an iced-over door lock, and wait somewhere warm rather than beside the car.
