How Erie's winters wear on locks

Erie's winters are heavy on snow. PennDOT's average snowfall figure for its northwest district, which includes Erie County, is 83 inches, nearly six times the 14 inches it gives for the Philadelphia district.

The trouble is mostly indirect. Over a long cold season, wood doors and frames can swell and shrink, and porches and steps can heave and settle. A door that shifts a few millimeters can leave the deadbolt rubbing its strike plate, or the latch missing it altogether. A useful test: if the bolt turns easily with the door open but binds when it is closed, the problem is alignment, not the lock.

In East Bayfront, the survey behind the city's 2020 neighborhood plan found 17 percent of residents naming windows and doors as their top home improvement, citing winterization. A shifted door that makes a deadbolt bind is often a lock repair job.

Older hardware worth keeping

Hardware of that age often responds well to repair: cleaning, new springs, a replacement cylinder or a reset strike. Repair also means the door does not have to be cut for a modern lockset.

Upkeep through the year

• In the fall, check that the deadbolt slides fully into the strike without lifting or pushing the door, and have the strike adjusted before the snow comes.
• Lubricate cylinders with a product made for locks, such as graphite or a dry lubricant; household oil attracts grit.
• If a lock ices up, use a lock de-icer and never force the key. A snapped key calls for broken key extraction.
• Keep snow and ice melt swept off the threshold so the door closes fully.
• In spring, after the thaw, check the alignment again.

Describe what the lock does and when: it sticks only in winter, binds only when the door is shut, the key turns hard, or the latch does not catch. A photo of the door edge and the strike plate helps.
