How Pittsburgh winters treat fobs

Snowfall in PennDOT's Allegheny County district averages 43 inches a winter, and a fob spends that season in cold pockets, wet gloves and cup holders full of slush. Cold cuts the power a coin cell can deliver, so a weak battery shows itself first on a cold morning: shorter range, buttons that need several presses, or a push-button start that doesn't detect the fob. Try a fresh battery before anything else. A fob that only needs a battery doesn't need programming.

Moisture is the other problem. Snowmelt that works into the case can corrode the battery contacts and the circuit board. If a fob got soaked, take the battery out and let it dry fully before deciding it is dead. A cracked case lets in more water each winter, and replacing the shell early can save the electronics inside.

Programming in a garage or on the street

Programming happens at the car, with the car and its keys together, and the doors need room to open. In a parking garage, give the garage name and level, and mention if the space is tight or entry needs a ticket or pass. On the street after a snowfall, a car that is buried may need to be dug out first so the doors can open and close. If the car sits in your own garage or driveway, say so, since that is usually the simplest place to work.

What to bring

• every working fob and key for the car; on some models, programming a new fob erases any fob that isn't present
• the VIN, which is also visible on the dashboard through the windshield
• photo ID and the registration or title
• the car's year, make and model, and whether it uses push-button start
• if you bought a fob yourself, its part number, since a fob must match the car's system and some aftermarket fobs can't be programmed
