A fob that stops working has often just run down its coin cell. Before booking programming:

1. Open the fob and note the battery type printed on the cell.
2. Fit a fresh cell and test the fob right beside the car.
3. If the buttons still fail, or the car does not recognize the fob to start, the fob may need programming or replacement.

A fob that went through a wash or a downpour may have a damaged circuit board rather than a dead cell. A shorter range or a button that needs several presses is the usual sign of a weak battery.

Where the car should be

Programming is done at the car, so pick a spot where it can stay put. A driveway or garage gives room to work without traffic.
