Where the car is parked shapes the wait

A car lockout means getting into your own vehicle without damaging the door, the glass or the weatherstripping. In San Antonio, the parking rules around the car matter almost as much as the door.

• On-street meters and pay stations are enforced Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and not on Sundays or official city holidays, so the day and time of the lockout change how much the meter matters.
• Big events. Event rates apply during Fiesta San Antonio, the Texas Folklife Festival and other large events, so a lockout during one may run on different parking terms.

Heat and a closed car

Never leave a child or a pet in a locked car, even briefly. If one is inside, call 911 first. Stay in the shade and keep water with you while you wait. If the engine is running with the keys inside, say so, since the car keeps using fuel until it is opened.

• the car's make, model, year and color
• where the keys are: visible inside, in the trunk, or lost
