Before booking programming, rule out the battery. A fob that works beside the car but not across a parking lot, or that works in the afternoon but not at dawn, often has a tired coin cell rather than a lost pairing.

Boise is hard on those cells at both ends of the year. NOAA's Idaho summary puts the city's average July high at 92.7°F, nearly 10 degrees above Coeur d'Alene's 82.8°F, and a fob left on a dashboard or console in summer sun gets hotter than the air, which shortens battery life. In winter, with an average January low of 25.5°F, a weak cell can sag on a cold morning and seem fine once it warms up. Try a fresh battery of the size printed on the old one. If the range comes back, the fob needs no programming.

Where to program the car

Programming happens at the car, with every fob present, and can take a while. Choose a spot where the car can sit undisturbed.

• Downtown. The city's downtown parking page caps a metered stay at two hours in Zones 1 and 2 and at four in Zone 3, enforced 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays. A Zone 3 space leaves more margin than a two-hour one. This is general information, not legal advice.
• At home. A driveway or garage keeps the work out of traffic. Cold mornings are also hard on the car's own battery, and a weak one can interrupt some programming, so a car that has been slow to start should have its battery checked first.

Bring every fob and the VIN

Some cars clear every stored fob when programming starts, so bring every working fob and key, not only the new one. Also have:

• the VIN, which also appears on your registration;
• a photo ID and the registration or title;
• the part number of a fob bought from a parts store or online, since not every blank suits the car.
