Proving the car is yours

A replacement key is cut and, on most newer cars, programmed to the car's immobilizer, so whoever asks for one has to show the car is theirs. Have ready:

1. A photo ID.
2. The title or current registration, in the same name as the ID. For a leased or financed car, bring the registration and the lease or loan papers.
3. The VIN, printed on the dashboard at the base of the windshield and on the driver's door jamb.

When a lost key strands the car

Idaho law puts a clock on a car that stays put. Idaho Code § 49-102(2) defines an abandoned vehicle by time and place: one left on a highway, or on another person's property without consent, for a full day or longer. It makes an exception when the owner-operator cannot move the vehicle and has told law enforcement and asked for help, so if a key problem leaves you stuck on a public street, report it. Under § 49-1805, an officer attaches a notice to an abandoned vehicle warning that it will be towed after 48 hours. Downtown, the meter limit keeps running too: Zones 1 and 2 cap a stay at two hours, Zone 3 at four.

Private lots follow a different path. The City of Boise says that since January 1, 2026, law enforcement no longer enters private property to tow abandoned vehicles. Instead, whoever controls the property arranges removal with a tow company, subject to the conditions in § 49-1806. What to have ready

• Year, make and model, and whether the key was a plain metal key, a chipped key, a flip key or a push-button smart key.
