Homes and locks in Boise

The North End, generally the part of the city north of State Street, has tree-lined drives such as Harrison Boulevard. Warm Springs Avenue and the East End hold some of the city's largest homes, built by wealthy miners and businessmen around the turn of the 20th century.

Six of Boise's ten historic districts are residential: East End, East Main Street, Harrison Boulevard, Hays Street, North End and Warm Springs Avenue. The city says most exterior changes in its historic districts need a Certificate of Appropriateness, and its project list includes replacing windows. If a lock problem turns into replacing an original door or window, ask the city's preservation staff first.

The Bench, generally between Federal Way and Cole Road, sits about 60 feet above downtown; its older areas include Central Rim, Morris Hill and Depot Bench. Southwest Boise has neighborhoods built from the 1960s to the early 1980s, some on acre-sized plots with the occasional farmhouse and pasture. On those lots, include shop, barn and gate locks when you plan a lock rekeying.

Southeast Boise runs from Boise State University to Micron Technology. Original South Boise, platted in 1890, is a triangular 33-block neighborhood next to campus, where a landlord can rekey between tenants.

Businesses and buildings

Car trouble in Boise

Downtown meters are enforced Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a two-hour limit in Zones 1 and 2 and four hours in Zone 3.

Idaho Code § 49-102(2) treats a vehicle left on a highway, or on someone else's property without consent, for 24 hours or longer as abandoned, unless the owner-operator cannot move it and has notified law enforcement and asked for help. Under § 49-1805, an officer attaches a notice that the vehicle will be towed after 48 hours. Since January 1, 2026, the city says law enforcement no longer enters private property to tow abandoned vehicles; the person in control of the property arranges removal with a tow company, under the conditions in § 49-1806. If a lost key strands your car on a Boise street, arrange a car key replacement before the notice runs out.

Local rules worth knowing

Knox box keys. Boise amends International Fire Code Section 506.1 in City Code Title 5, Chapter 12: unless the fire code official approves otherwise, key boxes are required on all structures with fire alarm or sprinkler systems connected to a monitoring service. The box holds a master key to all entrances, including mechanical, electrical and fire riser rooms, plus access cards and roof, elevator and fire alarm panel keys.

The fire department says any change of locks or keys requires the owner or occupant to provide new keys; the nearest fire station or district fire inspector sets an appointment to change the keys and lock the box. This is general information, not legal advice.
