The CitySquare redevelopment, on the site of the former Worcester Galleria, mixes uses that need very different doors: the Unum office building, the 168-room AC Hotel, apartments at 145 Front Street and the 640,000-square-foot Mercantile Center.

In a multi-tenant building, exterior doors, lobby doors and stairwells generally belong to the building, while a suite entry and interior rooms may be the tenant's. The lease decides. Before arranging work, confirm with property management which doors are yours, and whether the building runs its own key or access-control system that new hardware must match.

Mill buildings south of downtown

The Crompton Loom Works, at Green and Harrison streets south of downtown, dates in part to 1860 and has been adapted to other uses. In an adapted building, one tenant's space can include original openings and doors added later, so hardware may vary in age. List every door your space uses, including rear and loading doors, when you ask for work.

Employee turnover and keys

Every departure is a chance for a key to leave with the person.

• Rekey when keys do not come back. If a former employee or tenant kept a key, rekeying the affected cylinders ends that access without replacing the locks.
• Master key systems. A manager's key opens every door, while each employee's key opens only what that person needs, so one lost key does not mean rekeying the whole building.
• Restricted keyways. Keys that cannot be copied at an ordinary hardware counter make a key log meaningful.
• Keep a log. Record who holds which key and collect keys at the last shift.
