Which door has you locked out

In Worcester, a lockout depends on the building as much as the lock. A three-decker puts one flat on each floor, and the flats open off shared front and rear stairwells, so a stairwell door and a flat door can both stand between you and home. Entrances vary: some serve all three flats, others serve the ground floor and the two upper flats separately.

• Stairwell door locked, flat door not. A neighbor or the owner may be able to let you into the hall.
• Your own flat's door. Say whether it is the front entry or the rear porch door.
• An enclosed porch. The 1988 National Register nomination for the city's three-deckers notes that many porches were later enclosed, so the door you use every day may not be the original entry.

Older buildings on Grafton Hill and Piedmont

Three-deckers already stood on the west slope of Grafton Hill and in Piedmont by 1890. Buildings that old can carry locks from several decades, so a photo of the door and its hardware helps.

Proof that the home is yours

Have photo ID showing the address, or a lease or deed in your name, ready once the door is open. In a rental, the State Sanitary Code's lock rule, 105 CMR 410.270, requires the owner to supply keys to the main entry, your unit and the common areas, so a call to the owner may get you in. If the landlord is the one keeping you out, M.G.L. c. 186, § 15F says a landlord who shuts a tenant out without a valid court order can owe three months' rent or three times the damages. Waiting out the cold
