A key that opens and starts a vehicle is a key to the whole car, so proof of ownership is worth having on hand:

• Photo ID in the name of the registered owner.
• Registration or title. A photo of either on your phone saves a step if the paper copy was in the glove box of the car. If the papers are gone for good, ask the agency that issued them for a duplicate.
• The registered owner. If the car is registered to someone else, such as a parent, spouse or employer, have that person reachable.

A car that cannot move

1. The vehicle identification number (VIN). It appears on the registration and the title, and on most cars the VIN plate can be seen at the base of the windshield on the driver's side.
2. The car's year, make, model and trim, and whether it uses push-button start or a turned key.
3. Any remaining key or fob, even a damaged one, and any spare you know of.
4. The car's street and the closest cross street, or the garage name.
