Coin cell batteries lose voltage in the cold, and January in western Massachusetts sits in the low 20s °F, according to NOAA's state climate summary. A fob with a tired battery tends to fail first on a winter morning. A fob that works in a warm kitchen but not at the curb points to the battery rather than programming.

Before asking for programming:

• Replace the battery with the exact cell type printed on the old one, and check that the contacts are clean.
• If the fob went through snow or meltwater in a coat pocket, let it dry fully before testing.
• Try the fob up close to the car.

If the buttons still do nothing, or the car does not recognize the fob to start, the fob needs programming or replacing.

A dead fob on a ban day

A failing fob often shows up when a car has to move, and in Worcester that can mean a declared winter ban: under Chapter 13, § 43 of the Revised Ordinances, cars must come off the even-numbered side of most streets.
