Where keys break in Grand Rapids

Keys tend to snap where a lock is worn, stiff or iced up, and Grand Rapids homes and winters supply all three.

• Do not try a spare key while the piece is still inside.
• If the door is open, keep it from latching until the piece is out, so a broken key does not become a lockout.

2. Which lock it is: unit door, shared front entry, deadbolt, mailbox or storage.
3. Whether the door is locked or open, and whether a working spare exists.
4. In a rented building, the owner or manager's contact, since a shared entry lock is usually theirs to decide on.
