How Michigan weather wears on Grand Rapids locks

NOAA describes Michigan's summers as warm and humid and its winters as cold, with the Great Lakes making the state more moist than other north-central states. Each season leaves its mark on a door:

• Summer humidity. Wooden doors and frames take on moisture and swell, so a deadbolt that threw smoothly in February can rub its strike in July. Forcing it wears the bolt and the cam behind it.
• Winter cold. Lubricant thickens and latches spring back slowly. Wood shifts with the seasons, and a door may stop meeting its strike.
• Thaw and re-ice. Snowmelt that runs down a door and turns to ice overnight can lock a latch in place. De-icer made for locks and some patience do less harm than turning the key harder.

Older hardware in Belknap Lookout, Cherry Hill and Fairmount Square

Belknap Lookout, on the bluff between the Grand River and College Avenue, saw homes go up in large numbers from 1874 until about 1888, and the city lists Cherry Hill and Fairmount Square among its historic districts. Where a door from those decades still has its original mortise lock, the lock can often be cleaned, re-sprung or fitted with new parts rather than pulled out.

Under Michigan's Local Historic Districts Act, ordinary maintenance is not work under the act, but a repair that changes a resource's external appearance is (MCL 399.201a). The Historic Preservation Commission's guidelines also say to repair a historic door's distinctive features. • Put a dry lubricant made for locks in the keyway, not household oil, which collects grit.
• Keep lock de-icer in a coat pocket or bag, not locked in the car.
