Homes and locks in Grand Rapids

Heritage Hill, bounded by Crescent Street, Union Avenue, Pleasant Street and Lafayette Avenue, has about 1,300 homes in more than 50 architectural styles, the oldest from 1844. The city's preservation guidelines say estates there were divided into apartments after World War II and many larger houses will never return to single-family use.

Belknap Lookout, between the Grand River and College Avenue from Crescent Street north to Leonard Street, sits on Belknap Hill, a 160-foot bluff above downtown. Homes went up in large numbers from 1874 until about 1888, and more than 400 steps on four staircases climb the slope.

Doors in the historic districts

Heritage Hill, Heartside, Cherry Hill, Wealthy Street and Fairmount Square are historic districts under Chapter 68 of the City Code. Michigan's Local Historic Districts Act requires a permit before any work affecting the exterior appearance of a resource in a historic district (MCL 399.205). Ordinary maintenance is not work under the act, but a repair that changes a resource's external appearance is (MCL 399.201a).

The Historic Preservation Commission's guidelines say:

• Repair a historic door's distinctive features; replacement is considered only if repair is not feasible.
• Exterior burglar bars and security gates are considered only for a shown safety need, after less intrusive efforts are exhausted.
• Street-facing storm doors must be full lite, among other criteria, to go through staff review instead of the commission.
• Historic leaded, stained or prismatic glass may not be removed.

In these districts, lock repair or lock rekeying keeps the historic door in place.

Businesses and buildings

The Heartside Historic District, designated in 1979, grew near the railroad stations as a location for loading facilities and wholesale houses; the National Candy Company factory was built at 40 Cherry Street SW. In these buildings, say which entrance is involved: street door, loading door or upper-floor entry.

Wealthy Street has been a historic district since 1997. In 1872 its business owners raised money for a streetcar line, and the street became a stopping place for travelers to and from Reeds Lake. Storefront guidelines bar removing, altering or enclosing character-defining entrances, or moving a main entrance.

Car trouble in Grand Rapids

From November 1 through April 1, streets with seasonal parking signs follow the city's odd/even rule. On odd-numbered dates from 1 a.m. to 6 p.m., cars park on the side with odd-numbered addresses; on even dates, the even side. From 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. either side is allowed, but cars must be on the next day's side by 1 a.m.

A late-evening car lockout on these streets runs up against the 1 a.m. deadline, so mention which side the car is on.

Local rules worth knowing

After a Notice of Rental Certification, owners schedule a Certificate of Compliance inspection under the Grand Rapids Property Maintenance Code and the 2021 International Property Maintenance Code. The city's checklist, revised January 2026, includes:

• Deadbolt locks on exterior doors, and peephole viewers on doors without adjacent window access (Section 304.18.1, among others).
• A functioning locking device on windows accessible to the public, plus removable pinning that holds single- or double-hung sashes open 4 to 6 inches (Sections 304.13.2 and 304.18.2).
• No hasp hardware, double-keyed locks or padlocks on egress or habitable room doors.
