What a house lockout means here

Which door you are locked out of depends on the building. Census Bureau estimates for 2024 put 15.8 percent of Grand Rapids homes in buildings of two to four units, about twice the national share. In an older house divided into flats, the porch, stair and unit doors may each take a different key, so one missing key can leave you outside one door or three.

• Single-family house. Note whether the deadbolt was thrown or only the knob latch was set, and which door you left by.
• Divided house. If a neighbor can let you through the shared entry, only your unit door is left; say so in your request.
• Rented unit. The owner or manager may hold a spare key, and a call to them can settle the lockout.

What to have ready

Proof that you live there helps. Photo ID with the address is simplest; if your ID lists an earlier address, a lease, deed or other document with your name and this address will do. Waiting in the cold or heat
