What counts as urgent in Grand Rapids

Safety comes before locks. If someone is hurt, trapped or in danger, call 911 first.

A lock problem is urgent when waiting puts people or property at risk:

• Being locked out on a winter night, when Michigan's cold becomes a real risk.
• A child, a pet or a vulnerable adult shut inside a house or a closed car in summer heat, or a car running in a closed garage. Call 911, not a locksmith.
• An exterior door that will not lock or close after a break-in or a failed lock.
• A key broken off in the only door you can use.

A stiff lock that still works, or a spare key you want next week, is not an emergency; lock repair covers it.

After a break-in

Call the police before anything else, and leave the damaged door and lock alone until they have seen it. Photograph the damage and keep any broken parts. Afterward the door can be secured, and locks rekeyed if keys were taken. In a divided house, tell the owner and the other households.

If entry came through a window of a Grand Rapids rental, the city's rental inspection checklist calls for a functioning locking device on windows accessible to the public, plus removable pinning that holds single- or double-hung sashes open 4 to 6 inches (Sections 304.13.2 and 304.18.2). Storms and power loss

Ice storms can cut power across wide areas of Michigan. In March 2026, MDOT reported ice on trees, power lines, structures and roads in a band from Manistee and Ludington to Alpena and Alcona in the northern Lower Peninsula, leaving tens of thousands of homes and businesses without power as overnight lows dipped into the single digits. A power cut changes which locks work: a battery-powered smart lock keeps working, a garage door opener or powered building entry may not, and the mechanical key becomes the fallback.

What to send with an urgent request

1. The address, unit and nearest cross streets.
2. What happened, and which door or vehicle is involved.
3. Whether anyone is inside, and whether 911 or the police have been called.
4. Photos of the lock and door.
