Older doors and their hardware

The Newlands Historic District, on the bluffs south of the Truckee River roughly between Arlington Avenue, Monroe Street and Keystone Avenue, was planned by the Newlands Company in the early twentieth century and joined the National Register of Historic Places in 2016. Its Period Revival and Craftsman houses may still carry original hardware, which is part of how a house looks. Before replacing a lock that shows from the street, ask whether it can be repaired or matched, and keep the original if it comes off.

Beyond Newlands, Washoe County's housing skews older than Nevada's: its median home dates from 1991, against 1996 statewide, and about 35 percent of its homes predate 1980. Replacement makes sense when the hardware itself has failed rather than just the keys. Signs include a cylinder worn loose in the door, a knob that spins, a latch that no longer catches or a lock that has been forced. If keys are the only worry, lock rekeying may be enough.

The deadbolt rule

On July 22, 2026, the Reno City Council adopted local amendments to the 2024 International Property Maintenance Code, so check with the city for the effective date. Under amended Section 304.15, every entrance to a dwelling unit or sleeping unit needs a lock that tightly secures the door with a deadbolt, and locks on means-of-egress doors must meet Section 702.3. An older entry door with only a knob latch is worth checking against that text, and owners and landlords can ask the city how it applies. This is general information, not legal advice.

• The door material and which doors need work: front, garage, side or unit
• Whether the house sits in a historic district such as Newlands, and whether the hardware looks original
• How many doors, and whether one key should open them all
