Sparks was built by the Southern Pacific railroad when it moved its division point from Wadsworth. It offered deeded lots of 50 by 140 feet for a token sum and offered to move every Wadsworth house to the new town, which was incorporated on March 15, 1905. The first tract was laid out next to the railroad's roundhouse.

The town stayed small until the 1950s, when Reno's growth set off a housing boom north of the railroad. Doors in older houses may have been refit more than once, so describe what is on the door now: a lock set into the door edge, or a knob with a separate deadbolt.

The city says it has grown tremendously since the 1990s. Many newer neighborhoods are planned developments, each with standards in a city-adopted handbook: Wingfield Springs, Pioneer Meadows, Stonebrook, D'Andrea, Miramonte, Kiley Ranch South and Kiley Ranch North, whose handbooks run through Phase 12. Revitalization along downtown's B Street began in the early 1980s and culminated in 1996 with a multi-screen movie complex and a plaza. The area is now Victorian Square, home to annual events such as Hot August Nights and Sparks Hometowne Christmas. The Nugget's tower, finished in 1984, was the city's first high-rise casino.

In the 1970s the area south of the railroad began to fill with warehouses and light industry; the Union Pacific rail yard sits south of Interstate 80, next to the Nugget towers. • The 48-hour limit. Sparks Police state that it is unlawful to park a vehicle or non-commercial trailer on a street, highway or alley for longer than 48 hours, and such cars can be reported as abandoned. • Snow on side streets. The city's winter plan gives priority to arterial and collector streets, school zones and bus routes. Residential streets are not sanded or plowed during snow events, so mention an icy or unplowed street when you ask for help.
• Event weekends. During Victorian Square events, say which lot or garage the car is in and the nearest cross street.

Local rules worth knowing

Sparks has its own alarm ordinance, Sparks Municipal Code Chapter 9.06. A permit is required to own an alarm system in the city, and a new system needs one within ten days of installation or activation.
