The Newlands Historic District sits on the bluffs south of the Truckee River, roughly between Arlington Avenue, Monroe Street and Keystone Avenue. Planned by the Newlands Company in the early twentieth century and known for Period Revival and Craftsman homes, it joined the National Register of Historic Places in 2016. For a house there, say whether the door hardware is original.

Damonte Ranch, in southern Reno along Interstate 580 and U.S. Route 395, is a 1,962-acre master-planned community of single- and multi-family homes on a former cattle and alfalfa ranch; its high school opened in 2003. After a move there, count the front door, garage-to-house door and any side gate before asking for lock rekeying.

Businesses and buildings

East Fourth Street began as a county road linking Reno and Sparks, a block north of the Central Pacific rail line. It became the Lincoln Highway route after 1913 and was U.S. Highway 40 by 1926. Business prospered until Interstate 80, completed in 1974, bypassed it to the north; a historic survey of the corridor was completed in 2024.

Car trouble in Reno

Reno plows Priority 1 and 2 streets first: major and collector streets, areas around schools and emergency service sites. Examples of Priority 1 streets include portions of Virginia Street, Longley Lane and Stead Boulevard. Most plowing is on higher-elevation routes and outlying areas, which get the most snow.

• The city asks residents to park off the street before forecast storms, so say if a lost key has left a car at the curb.
• The city does not remove plow berms from driveways, so a car there may be boxed in after a storm.

Local rules worth knowing

Deadbolts. On July 22, 2026, the Reno City Council amended Reno Municipal Code Chapter 14.05 to adopt the 2024 International Property Maintenance Code with local amendments; confirm the effective date with the city. Amended Section 304.15 requires locks at all entrances to dwelling units and sleeping units to tightly secure the door with a deadbolt lock. Locks on means-of-egress doors must meet Section 702.3.

Vacant buildings. Local Section 109.10.1 requires every opening of a vacant or abandoned structure to be secured against entry; if it becomes unsecured, the code official orders the owner to board it up. For commercial and multi-unit residential properties in the city's redevelopment areas (Section 901.1), the 2026 Redevelopment Area Property Maintenance Standards add:

1. Unsecured openings must be secured within 24 hours of vacancy (Section 907.2).
2. Where glass is missing or broken, boarding must be at least 5/8-inch exterior-grade plywood or equivalent, with tamper-resistant or bolt-through fasteners.
3. A structure boarded more than 30 consecutive days needs an aesthetic treatment (Section 907.3).

Vestibules and alcoves. Under Section 908 of the redevelopment standards, a vestibule or alcove opening onto an alley or public right-of-way must be secured when the building is closed or unoccupied, with a barrier flush with the facade that opens outward for emergency egress and stays open during business hours.
