Historic blocks and master-planned villages

The city's historic properties list includes these residential areas:

• Las Vegas High School Neighborhood District: homes from 1928 to 1941 between Bridger and Gass avenues.
• John S. Park Historic District: from 1931, bounded by Park Paseo, South 9th Street, Franklin Avenue and 5th Place.
• Huntridge: two 1944 houses, on Francis Avenue and Cottonwood Place, joined the city register in 2024.
• Berkley Square Neighborhood Historic District: built 1954 to 1955 between Byrnes and Leonard avenues.
• Beverly Green Historic District: 1951 to 1964, between East St. Louis Avenue and East Oakey Boulevard.

John S. Park and Beverly Green are on the city's register; the other two districts are National Register listings only. A worn lock on an original door worth keeping may need only lock repair.

Summerlin finished its first residential area in 1990. Most of it is inside city limits; Summerlin South is in unincorporated Clark County, where city RV permits are not valid. Siena is one of its two gated country club developments.

Older commercial buildings

The list also includes the 1931 U.S. Post Office and Courthouse on Stewart Avenue, the 1944 Huntridge Theater on East Charleston Boulevard and John Mull's Meats (1953) on Thom Boulevard, all on the city's register. A new door or storefront there can be a planning matter as well as a hardware job.

Parking and driving in Las Vegas

• Monthly permit parking is available at lots and garages across downtown. If a key is lost or locked in a car there, note the garage and level.
• RVs and mobile homes need a city permit to park on residential streets for loading and unloading: up to 48 hours each, at least 72 hours apart, and no more than six in three months. If a lost key strands an RV at the curb, start a car key replacement request early in that window.

City rules worth knowing

Short-term rentals. The city defines these as homes rented to guests for less than 31 consecutive days, under Las Vegas Municipal Code Chapter 6.75. Per city guidance, a new license needs the owner living on site during rentals, and short-term rentals are prohibited in some master-planned areas, including Summerlin and Skye Canyon. The Code Enforcement inspection overview includes:

• Exterior doors must open from inside without a key or any special knowledge or effort, and must not be blocked.
• The door between the garage and the house must be fire-rated and self-closing.
• Pool gates must self-close, self-latch and open away from the pool, with the latch on the pool side 3 to 6 inches below the top; house doors to the pool need alarms.

A deadbolt keyed on the inside conflicts with the first item. Locks with an inside thumb-turn, including many keypad and smart locks, open without one.

Historic properties. Under the city zoning code, Title 19.10.150 (Historic Designation), properties on the Las Vegas Historic Property Register or in a locally designated district follow extra procedures. The city's alteration guide says work needing a building permit must first be approved by the Historic Preservation Commission, sometimes through a Certificate of Appropriateness; minor work may be reviewed in-house by the Historic Preservation Officer. Ask the Historic Preservation Officer before replacing a front door or adding a security door.
