Cold weather and fob batteries

A fob runs on a small battery, and cold saps it. Freezing mornings are possible in northern Nevada from early autumn through late spring, and across the state the daily temperature range averages about 30 to 35 degrees. A fob left in a parked car goes through that swing every day, so keep spares indoors and test each one before winter.

A fob that fails on a freezing morning may only need a fresh battery, so try that first, using the battery type printed inside the case. If the fob still does nothing, or the car no longer recognizes it, programming is the next step.

Garage, driveway or curb

A fob is programmed to the car it belongs to, so the car has to be within reach. Before forecast storms the city asks Reno residents to keep cars off the street, which can leave a car in a garage or driveway when a fob fails. • Photo ID and the title or registration
• The car's location and any gate code or access needed to reach it
