What a lockout looks like in Reno's housing

The door you are locked out of depends on where you live. The Newlands Historic District, south of the Truckee River, is known for Craftsman and Period Revival houses, so a lockout there may involve original door hardware. Say what the lock looks like and whether it has ever been changed, because older doors call for more care.

Damonte Ranch, the master-planned community in southern Reno, mixes single-family houses with multi-family homes. At a house, the locked door is usually the front door or the one from the garage. In a multi-family building there may be a building door, a gate and your own unit door, and a property manager may control the first two. Ask whether they can let you in as far as your own door, then say which door is the problem.

Waiting outside in the cold

Northern Nevada's freeze season stretches from early autumn to late spring, so a lockout that starts on a mild afternoon can carry into a night below freezing. Get everyone into a car, a neighbor's home or a lobby, and say in your request if children, an older adult or anyone unwell are waiting with you. If someone inside is in danger or needs medical help, call 911.

What to have ready

• Photo ID showing the address, or a lease, deed or utility bill if your ID shows an older address
• Which door is locked, and whether it has a knob, deadbolt, keypad or older mortise lock
• Whether the key is lost or inside, and who holds a spare
• Cross streets, plus any gate code or building access
