Downtown Henderson was once called the Basic Townsite, where temporary houses for the families of Basic Magnesium plant workers began going up in February 1942. Pittman, which predates it, is still a neighborhood. In an older home in either area, a lock rekeying after you move in keeps earlier owners' keys from working.

More than three false alarms in 30 days brings a police notice to take corrective action within 14 days (4.18.290). Car trouble in Henderson

• A vehicle parked on public property for more than 48 hours is presumed abandoned (HMC 15.12.020) and may not be left on a street (HMC 10.06.040). A posted notice gives at least 72 hours before a tow, and a short move to dodge the limit does not count (HMC 10.06.060). If a lost key strands your car at the curb, arrange a car key replacement before then.
• The Henderson Fire Department warns that even with the windows down, a vehicle's interior can reach 125 degrees in minutes, and advises keeping keys and remote entry devices away from children. If a child is locked in a hot car, call 911 first, before calling for a car lockout.

Local rules worth knowing

Residential locks. HMC 15.12.050 requires exterior doors and windows to fit securely in their frames, with operable locks if locks are present. Bars or grills over a bedroom's emergency escape opening must release or come off from the inside without a key, a tool or more than normal opening force.

Vacant buildings. HMC 15.12.030 requires vacant buildings to be kept secure, with functioning locks on all windows and doors; otherwise the city can order openings boarded with exterior-grade plywood at least 5/8 inch thick.

Short-term vacation rentals. Under Development Code Section 19.9.4.F, a registered rental needs a working front, street-facing security camera keeping two months of footage (multi-unit buildings with monitored common entrances are exempt) and an illuminated street number visible from the street. In a common-interest community, the governing documents must expressly allow the rental, apart from certain rentals registered by February 18, 2022.
