Safety before locks

Some situations need 911 or the police before anyone thinks about a lock:

• Someone at risk. A child, a pet, an older adult or anyone who needs medication is shut in a car or house and cannot get out: call 911.
• A break-in. If you come home to a forced door or broken window, do not go inside. Call the police from somewhere safe, and leave the damaged door and lock as they are until officers have seen them.
• Gas, smoke or fire. Get out and call 911; a lock is not the problem to solve.

What counts as urgent

Once everyone is safe, these lock problems are usually urgent:

• an exterior door that will not lock or latch after a break-in or storm damage
• a key broken off in the only working entry
• lost keys carried with something that shows your address
• a lockout with nowhere safe to wait out cold, heat or a storm

Snowstorms and road closures

The city lists portions of Northern Boulevard and Golf Course Road as likely to close in snowstorms, and it does not remove snow or ice on residential streets. If your route runs along either road, say so and name the open cross streets you would use instead. What to send in an urgent request

1. What happened, and whether police or 911 have been called, with a report number if you have one.
2. The address, subdivision and nearest cross streets, and any gate code or contact.
3. What is wrong with the door, lock or vehicle: will not latch, frame split, key broken, keys lost. Typical platted lots run 80 by 272.25 feet, so say whether the door is at the front, rear, garage or an outbuilding.
