What Ohio weather does to a lock

NOAA's climate summary covers the whole state, and three of its findings bear on a lock:

• Snow and meltwater. Northern Ohio along Lake Erie's southern shore gets 60 inches or more of snow a year, while the south gets less than 16. Meltwater that runs into a keyway and ices up again can hold the pins in place. Use lock de-icer on a frozen lock and never force the key, since a twisted key can snap and need a broken key extraction.
• Humid summers. In hot, humid weather, NOAA says, the heat index can reach dangerous values. A deadbolt that drags only in those months often points to a swollen or misaligned door, not the lock.
• Heavy rain. NOAA reports a significant rise in 2-inch extreme rain events since the mid-1990s. Have any lock that sat in floodwater checked for corrosion.

Repairing instead of replacing

Pre-war doors in Cleveland's older neighborhoods may still carry their original mortise locks, and a lock of that kind can often be repaired instead of replaced. Springs, the cylinder and the strike can be serviced or renewed while the lock body stays in the door, so the door keeps its original look.
