Will the door take a smart lock

Most consumer smart locks are built to replace a standard bored deadbolt: a round hole through the door face and a smaller one into the door edge. A pre-war door may still carry a mortise lock set into a pocket in its edge, and a standard smart deadbolt does not fit that pocket. The choices are a smart lock made for mortise doors, or converting the door to a bored deadbolt, which means new holes.

Getting a yes first in rentals and large buildings

More than half of Cleveland's occupied homes are rented (53.9 percent), and buildings with 50 or more units hold another 12.7 percent. In a rental, get the landlord's or manager's approval in writing before swapping a lock, and read the lease for lock terms. Section 5321.05(B) of the Revised Code says a tenant shall not unreasonably withhold consent to entry for inspections and repairs, so agree on how the landlord gets in: a code, a key or the building's own access system. Cold nights, batteries and a backup key

NOAA says Ohio averages about six nights a year at 0°F or lower. Alkaline batteries lose capacity in the cold, so an exterior keypad that reports low battery in January may be fine in April. Lithium cells, where the lock's maker allows them, hold up better. Change batteries in the fall, before the first hard frost.

Choose a model with a mechanical key cylinder or an external battery terminal, and keep one physical key somewhere other than inside the house.
