The Short North follows High Street from Goodale Street to 7th and King Avenues, with Victorian Village to the west and Italian Village to the east. Its side blocks mix old apartment buildings and rowhouses with newer condominiums, and recent projects have turned small lots into buildings of ten stories or more, often combining apartments, shops and offices.

In these condo and mixed-use buildings, a lobby door, garage gate or elevator may run on a building-controlled fob system, so say which one you are locked out of.

The University District covers about 2.8 square miles between the Short North and Clintonville. Rental property and student housing concentrate east of High Street between 11th and 17th Avenues, and after World War II hundreds of owner-occupied houses became rooming houses or rental units. Its smaller neighborhoods include Weinland Park and Old North Columbus, once the village of North Columbus, platted in 1842.

A converted house can have a shared front door, separate unit doors inside and a back stair entrance, each with its own key. Between tenants, lock rekeying retires every old key without replacing the hardware.

Businesses and buildings

Most of the tightly packed brick buildings on the Short North stretch of High Street date from at least the early 20th century and have traditional storefronts. Where offices or apartments sit above a shop, the upper floors may have their own street door, keyed separately from the storefront.

The city runs design review for Downtown, East Franklinton and the University District through the Downtown Commission, the East Franklinton Review Board and the University Impact District Review Board. Car trouble in Columbus

Under the city's Snow and Ice Control Plan, arterial roads come first, then residential collectors. Residential streets get plow-only service, with no salt, once 4 inches or more of snow falls. The plan asks drivers to park off street if possible, and the city's Warrior Watch site shows when a street was last serviced. If your car is plowed in on a side street and you are also locked out, mention the snow.

The Division of Parking Services runs permit parking zones, including in the Short North, the University District, East Franklinton and around Children's Hospital. A vehicle in violation can get a citation and be impounded. If your keys are lost and the car is gone from one of these zones, check with the city about an impound before arranging car key replacement.

Local rules worth knowing

Columbus has separate commissions for German Village, Victorian Village and Italian Village, plus a Historic Resources Commission, and exterior alterations there may require a Certificate of Appropriateness. Rekeying or repairing a lock leaves the door itself unchanged; replacing an original entry door is worth raising with the commission first.

The city's Code Enforcement guidance says a vacant structure needs to be secured against entry, with standards in Section 4707.03 of the Columbus City Code, and treats a vacant property left unsecured at ground level as an emergency to report through 311.
