How cold winters stop a fob

NOAA's Ohio climate summary says the winters of 2013–14 and 2014–15 averaged 18 nights at 0°F or lower, well above the state's usual six. A coin-cell battery that was weak in October can give out on the first of those mornings. A fob that seems dead in the cold may work again once it warms in your pocket, so try a fresh battery before deciding it needs programming.

Wet weather is the other hazard. A fob soaked in a downpour or dropped in slush can short its circuit board. Open the case if you can, let it dry fully before testing, and if the buttons stay dead it may need replacing and programming as a new fob.

Signs that point to programming rather than a battery: the remote works only inches from the car, the car says "key not detected" with a fresh battery, or a newly bought fob has never worked.

Where the work happens

Programming needs the car itself, usually from the driver's seat with the ignition or start button, and on many models a tool plugged in under the dash. So the setting matters:

• Garage. In a structure or underground garage, say which level and whether the driver's door can open fully in the space.
