How the high desert wears on locks

Bend sits in the Oregon High Desert, on the east side of the Cascades. NOAA's 2022 climate summary for Oregon says the Cascades block the flow of moisture and leave the east much drier: some desert areas get under 10 inches of precipitation a year, while parts of the Coast Range get more than 100. Most areas receive the bulk of theirs in the winter months.

Dry air, dust and a wet winter season each wear on a lock in a different way:

• Dust in the keyway. Grit settles on the pins and the key begins to drag. Oil holds dust, so a dry lubricant is the better choice.

• Winter moisture. Water that reaches an exposed cylinder or gate latch mixes with dust into a grime that stiffens the mechanism.

Many of these faults call for lock repair rather than new hardware: a cleaned cylinder, a moved strike plate, a new latch or spring.

A gate stays outdoors in every season, so a sticking latch or an ordinary padlock is a common repair. Upkeep between repairs

1. Once or twice a year, puff dry lubricant into each exterior keyway and work the key a few times.
2. Tighten loose hinge and strike screws, since a sagging door drags on the latch.
3. When a key sticks, clean the lock rather than forcing the key. A snapped key calls for broken key extraction.
