Which door you are locked out of

• St. Elmo houses reached from the alley. In much of St. Elmo, at the foot of Lookout Mountain, cars reach houses from rear alleys, so the door you use every day may be the back one. Say which door is locked, and whether the front door carries a deadbolt you rarely use.
• Houses divided into apartments. Many St. Elmo houses were subdivided into apartments during the Depression and World War II, so a house that looks like one home may hold several. Say whether the locked door is your own unit door or a shared entrance; if it is shared, the owner or manager is the first call.
• Battery Place condos. The two condominium complexes on the bluff above the Tennessee River date from about 1980. Reaching a unit door first means getting into the building, so say how residents enter and who manages the complex.

Showing the home is yours

Census Bureau estimates for 2024 count more than half of Chattanooga households as renters, so the paperwork is often a lease. Photo ID showing the address is the simplest proof; a lease, deed or utility bill in your name also shows you live there.

If a landlord has shut you out of your home, that is a legal matter rather than a lockout.
