Does the door suit a smart lock?

Most smart deadbolts are built for a standard bored door. A door that already has a modern deadbolt usually takes one directly. An older door with a mortise lock may need a mortise-style smart lock, or a retrofit unit that fits over the existing deadbolt on the inside.

The city's four local historic districts add a second question: a keypad on a street-facing door may count as an exterior change. The St. Elmo guidelines exempt interior changes, so an inside-only retrofit that keeps the existing exterior cylinder is one option in that district. Approval in shared buildings

Renters are the majority in Chattanooga, so for many households the landlord decides. Get approval in writing, including whether the lock stays or goes at move-out and who gets the admin code. At Battery Place's two condominium complexes, or in Fort Wood's apartment complexes, an association or manager may control both the unit hardware and the building entry. A smart lock on your unit door does nothing for a shared entrance it does not control.

Cold mornings, humidity and batteries

NOAA puts Tennessee's average snowfall at 1 to 4 inches a year in the south and nearly a foot in the northeast. Alkaline batteries lose output in the cold, so a lock that ran all autumn can stall on a frosty morning, and an exterior keypad sits in humid summer air for months.

• Choose a model that warns of a low battery and has an outside emergency power contact.
• Change batteries on a schedule rather than waiting for the warning.
• Keep a working mechanical key, stored somewhere other than inside the house.
