Which door, and who else has a key

In the Census Bureau's 2024 estimates, Chandler's housing falls three ways: 66.0 percent detached houses, 20.8 percent in structures with five or more units, and 36.8 percent of occupied homes rented. That shapes the first phone calls. At a house, think of the spare held by a relative, a neighbor or a house sitter. At an apartment, the landlord or the property manager could hold a spare, and one call there can settle it.

A.R.S. 33-1343 runs in the other direction. It allows entry into a tenant's unit without consent in an emergency; otherwise the landlord must give at least two days' notice unless that is impracticable, and the visit has to be at a reasonable time. The National Weather Service counted 122 days at Phoenix in 2025 with a high of 100°F or more, and 23 days when the low stayed at 90°F or higher. Maricopa County says its temperatures frequently pass 110°F in summer. Waiting outside a locked house in that weather carries real risk, so get into shade or a cooled space, a shop or a friend's or neighbor's house for example, and describe where you are.

• In a large complex, the gate, a corridor door and your own door can each be locked separately, so work out which of them is stopping you.

• house, townhome or apartment, and which door
• whether anyone or any animal is inside
• whether you own the place or rent it, and whether the landlord or manager has been reached
