When the last key is gone

Without a key, a car generally stays where it was left until a new key is cut and, for most newer cars, programmed to it. Where it is parked in Idaho Falls affects how much time that leaves you.

• On a street or alley. City Code Section 9-4-26 limits an operable vehicle to 48 consecutive hours in the same location on a street or alley. Between November 14 and March 15, the snow-removal rules in Title 9, Chapter 5 can also force a move after a posted snow event, so give your snow zone if you know it.
• In a shared garage. Some Eleventh Street Historic District garages are detached double-bay buildings on a property line, shared by neighbors. If the car is in one, name the bay and let the neighbor know someone will be working there.
• In a driveway or private lot. Give the lot name, entrance and space, and check whether the lot has its own time limits.

Proof that the car is yours

A replacement key is made for one specific car, so have papers ready that show the car is yours:

1. Photo ID.
2. The title or current registration in your name. If the names or addresses do not match, for example after a recent purchase or move, bring the bill of sale, or contact your state motor-vehicle agency about updated papers.
3. The VIN, printed on the registration and on a plate visible through the windshield on the driver's side.

For a car owned by a business or a relative, have written permission from the owner along with the ownership papers.

What to send

1. Year, make and model, and the key type: plain metal, remote-head, flip key or push-button fob.
2. Whether any key still works, even a worn or valet key.
3. Where the car is: street and cross street, garage bay, driveway or lot.
4. Whether the car is locked.
