Cold weather and fob batteries

The coin cell in a fob delivers less power in the cold, so a weak battery that still works indoors can fail after the fob sits overnight in a parked car or an outer coat pocket. Slush and meltwater can also seep into a cracked case and corrode the contacts.

Before assuming the fob needs programming, fit a fresh battery of the size printed on the old one and check the case for moisture. If the buttons work but the dashboard still reports that no key is detected, or the car will not start, the fob may need to be programmed again or replaced.

Garage, lot or curb

A fob is programmed through the car itself, so where the car sits matters.

  • Parking authority sites. If the car is in a Springfield Parking Authority lot or garage, such as Union Station, give the facility name, level and space.
  • Curbside in winter. Springfield's February 2026 ban notice set different times for the even and odd sides of the street, so make sure the car is on the side that stays legal while the work is underway. Each new notice sets its own times, so check the current one.
