Proving the car is yours

Have photo ID plus the title or current registration, with matching names, ready before a new key is cut or programmed; a recent purchase may also call for the bill of sale. If the title or registration is missing along with the key, request a copy from your state motor-vehicle agency first. For a leased or company car, have the lease or a letter from the company.

Where the car is parked

Many modern keys have to be programmed at the car, so its location shapes the job.

• On a street in winter. A car with no key cannot be driven off a banned street. If a lost key has stranded yours on the banned side, say so in your request, since Springfield's February 2026 notice warned of ticketing and towing. If the car has already been towed, getting it back comes first.
• At a house. In Sixteen Acres, East Forest Park or any other residential neighborhood, say whether the car is in a driveway, a garage or on the street, and whether the garage door opens.
• Downtown or on Boston Road. Name the garage, level and space, or the plaza and its nearest store, so the car can be found.

What to have ready

1. The VIN, from the plate at the base of the windshield on the driver's side or from the registration.
2. The make, model and year, and whether the car starts with a push button or a turned key.
3. Any remaining key or fob, even a broken one, so it can be checked and programmed along with the new key.
