What winter does to a lock

Exterior locks feel the swing between a thaw and the next cold night. NOAA's state climate summary puts western Massachusetts Januaries in the low 20s °F, against around 30 °F near the coast. Snowmelt that trickles into a cylinder on a milder afternoon can turn back to ice overnight, jamming the pins or holding a latch half thrown.

• Use a dry lock lubricant, such as graphite or PTFE, in exterior cylinders; oil collects grit and stiffens in the cold.
• On a stuck lock, warm the key or use a lock de-icer. If the key still resists, stop rather than twisting harder, because a bent key can snap off in the cylinder.

Doors that shift with the seasons

Wood doors take on moisture and dry out over the year, swelling and shrinking as they do. If a McKnight or Forest Park Victorian, or a bungalow or Craftsman house in East Forest Park, still has its original wood door, watch for these signs:

• You have to lift, push or pull the door before the deadbolt will throw.
• The key turns easily with the door open but binds once it is closed.

Those usually point to a strike plate or hinges out of line rather than a failed lock. Resetting the strike or tightening hinge screws often fixes it.

Older hardware worth keeping

Upkeep before the cold

1. Lubricate exterior cylinders in the fall, before the first hard frost.
2. Keep snow cleared from thresholds so meltwater does not sit against the door.
3. Tighten loose screws in strikes, hinges and trim.
