Proving the car is yours

A replacement key is cut and, on most newer cars, programmed to that one vehicle, so proof of ownership is usually needed before work starts. Have ready:

• a photo ID with your name
• the title or registration in your name, issued by your state motor-vehicle agency
• for a leased or financed car, the lease or loan paperwork
• if the car belongs to a relative or an employer, the owner's written permission

If the papers are locked in the car, say so. The registration is often in the glove box and can be checked once the car is open.

At home, say whether the car is in a driveway, a garage or on the street, and give the neighborhood and nearest cross streets.

What to send

• the VIN, found at the base of the windshield on the driver's side, on the door-jamb sticker, or on the title or registration
• year, make and model
• the key type: a plain metal key, a flip key, or a smart key with push-button start
• whether any working key or fob is left, since adding a key to a car that still has one is simpler than replacing them all
