Safety comes before the lock
When a life may be at risk, such as a child, an older adult or a pet shut in a car or a house, call 911 before anything else. If you come home to a forced door or a broken window, stay outside, call the police, and let them check the house and record the damage before anything is repaired. What counts as urgent in Detroit
Some lock problems can wait for a planned visit. These usually cannot:
- A winter night with no way in. A household locked out in freezing weather cannot wait it out, so get somewhere heated meanwhile.
- A closed car in summer sun. A person or pet shut in the heat is a 911 call first.
- A door that won't lock after a break-in. Once police are done, a damaged frame, strike or lock may need to be made secure before the home is left empty. Census Bureau estimates put 78.3 percent of Detroit's homes before 1960, and on an older wood door a forced latch can split the frame around the strike.
- A car on a first-priority snow route. The Department of Public Works says streets marked with red and white signs are first priority for snow removal, and during a declared snow emergency vehicles parked illegally on the routes can be ticketed and towed. Keys locked inside or lost on one of those streets are urgent. This is general information, not legal advice.
- A key broken off in the only working door.
A lock that still works but has turned stiff or sticky is better handled as a planned lock repair.
What to send first
- who is at risk, if anyone, and whether 911 or the police have been called
- what happened: lockout, break-in damage, a broken key or lost car keys
- where you are: neighborhood, closest cross streets or mile road, and the building or vehicle type
- which door or vehicle, and whether any other way in still works
- photos of the damage or the lock
- for a rental, whether the landlord knows
