Cold, humidity and the fob in your pocket

Most fobs run on a coin cell, and coin cells lose voltage in the cold. A fob that answers in an attached garage but goes silent at the curb on a subzero morning may just have a weak battery, so try a new cell before booking programming. Most fobs keep their pairing through a battery change, though some cars ask for a short resync.

Moisture is the summer problem. NOAA describes Michigan's summers as warm and humid, and a fob carried in a damp pocket, or run through the wash, can corrode at the battery contacts or under the buttons.

Garage, driveway and street

Where the car lives changes how a fob fails. In a garage the fob stays close to the car and out of the weather; on the street it is fully exposed and often farther away. If the remote fails on a car with push-button start, many models have a backup way to start with a weak fob, and the owner's manual describes it.

Winter can turn a dead fob into a deadline. The Department of Public Works says signs barring parking on Detroit's snow emergency routes can go up as much as two days in advance, so check the signs on your block before leaving a car with a failed fob parked there.
