What counts as urgent in Lansing

Many lock problems can wait. These usually cannot:

A door that will not close or lock after a break-in or storm damage.
A home lockout on a winter night, or with a stove, bath or space heater running inside.
Someone shut inside a house or a car who cannot get out on their own, such as a child, a vulnerable adult or a pet. Call 911 first, in summer heat as much as in winter cold.
A car locked on a city street when a snow emergency is declared. Under Lansing Code Section 404.12, Level 3 bars parking on all city streets day and night, and cars left there can be ticketed and towed. This is general information, not legal advice.

Safety first

After a break-in, call the police before anything else. Stay out if someone may still be inside. Leave the door and frame as they are until police have seen them, then arrange to secure the opening.
If anyone is in danger, call 911. A locksmith is not an emergency responder.
Photograph the damage. Pictures help with the police report, a report to the owner or landlord, and the repair.

Storms and power outages

In March 2026, the Michigan Department of Transportation described ice coating trees, power lines and roads in a band from Manistee and Ludington to Alpena and Alcona, with tens of thousands of homes and businesses losing power while overnight lows fell into the single digits. Lansing is in the center of the state, but an outage anywhere brings the same door problems. A garage door opener or a powered building entry may stop working, and a mechanical key may be the only way in. Keep that key on your ring, not in the car.
