Which door you are locked out of

Design Lansing, the city's 2012 comprehensive plan, counts 65% of Lansing's housing as single-family detached, but a lockout still turns on the kind of building.

• Converted Four-squares and Queen Annes. The plan places these early-20th-century two-story houses east, west and south of downtown and notes that some now hold more than one household. Shut out of one, you may be facing a shared front door, your own unit door, or both, so say which. The owner or manager controls a shared door and may be able to open it for you.
• Ranches and split-levels. On Waverly, Holmes and Miller roads the plan cites ranches and split-levels, mostly with attached side garages. Before assuming the front door is the only problem, think through every door you still hold a key or code for: the garage keypad, a back door, a spare with a neighbor or landlord.

Waiting out the weather

NOAA describes cold winters and warm, humid summers in Michigan, so a lockout can mean a January porch or an August one. Wait in a car, with a neighbor or in a nearby shop, and say in your request where you are. If someone who cannot get out on their own is inside, or a stove or bath is running, call 911 first.

Proof the home is yours

It helps to keep these in reach:

• Photo ID with the address. If your ID shows an old address, a recent utility bill or piece of mail in your name can back it up.
• For a rental, the lease. A landlord may hold a key, so try them first, and tell them if a lock needs work afterward.
• For an owned house, the deed or a property tax statement if your ID does not match.

Describing the lockout
