Who can let you in depends on the building

By the Census Bureau's 2020 to 2024 estimates, about 8.6 percent of Clark County homes are in buildings of 50 or more units. If you live in one, the leasing office or on-site maintenance may hold a key to your unit, so call them before anyone else.

Older houses raise a different question. The Las Vegas High School Neighborhood District, between Bridger and Gass avenues, has homes built from 1928 to 1941. On a house that old, say whether the front door is original, since an owner may want it kept as it is.

Behind a gate, the question is access. Summerlin finished its first residential area in 1990, and Siena is one of its two gated country club developments. If a gate stands between the street and your door, tell whoever controls it that someone is coming.

When a landlord changed the lock

A key that stopped working because a landlord changed the lock is a different problem from a lost key. Under NRS 118A.390, a tenant whom a landlord unlawfully removes or locks out can recover damages, and a verified complaint for expedited relief must be filed within 5 judicial days after the lockout. Waiting out the heat

Las Vegas summer highs average 102°F, according to NOAA, and a doorstep in afternoon sun is a poor place to wait. Move to shade, a neighbor's home or a car with the air conditioning running. If someone inside cannot open the door themselves, such as a small child or a pet, call 911 rather than waiting.

What to have ready

Have something ready that shows the home is yours: a photo ID with this address, or a lease, deed or utility statement in your name. A house lockout request should include:

the address or cross streets, the building and unit in a complex, and how any gate opens
the door involved: front, back, or the entry from the garage
whether you own, rent or are visiting
whether the keys are inside or lost
