Is it the fob or the battery?

Many fob problems start as battery problems. The coin cell in a fob delivers less power when it is cold, so a fob that works from a few feet away but not across a parking lot is often just weak. Nevada's daily highs and lows average about 30 to 35 degrees apart, and a spare left in a parked car goes through that swing every day, which is hard on a small battery. Keep spares indoors.

Start with a fresh cell of the size printed on the old one. A weak car battery on a cold morning can also cause "key not detected" messages that look like a fob fault. If a new cell does not help, the fob may need to be reprogrammed or replaced.

Garage or street

Where the car lives changes the problem and the fix. A car in a garage stays out of the coldest nights. A car on a residential street stays wherever the snow leaves it, because the city's winter plan does not sand or plow residential streets during snow events. Programming normally means sitting in the driver's seat with every fob, sometimes with a tool plugged in under the dashboard, so the car has to be reachable and its doors able to open. If it is snowed in, say so, or clear the driver's side first.

What to have ready

• Every working fob and key for the car; on some vehicles, programming a new fob erases any fob that is not present
• The VIN, from the lower corner of the windshield or the registration
• Photo ID and proof that the car is yours, such as the registration
• The new fob, if you bought one, with the part number or FCC ID from its back
• Year, make, model, and whether the car has push-button start
