Where keys snap in Cincinnati buildings

A key breaks where it takes the most strain, and Cincinnati's housing puts that strain in a few predictable places.

• Shared entries. About one home in ten (10.6 percent) is in a three- or four-unit building, where street and stair doors may each have their own lock, and 13.6 percent are in buildings of 50 or more units, by Census Bureau estimates for 2024. A lock that every resident uses gets far more turns than a private one, so its keys and cylinder wear sooner.
• Older hardware. Buildings from 1939 or earlier hold 41.6 percent of the city's homes, and their doors may still carry original hardware. A key you have to jiggle is a key close to breaking.
• Frozen locks. NOAA counts about six nights a year at 0°F or lower across Ohio, and a key twisted against an iced-up cylinder can snap. The city's winter driving tips suggest de-icer instead.

If the key broke in a shared street or lobby door, tell the landlord or building manager. That lock usually belongs to the building, and the broken piece blocks the keyway for every other resident too.

Before you call

• Don't push a spare, or the other half of the key, into the same keyway. It can drive the fragment deeper.
• Don't try to glue the pieces together to pull the fragment out.
• Stop turning a key that feels bent or stuck before it snaps.

1. A photo of the lock face showing the broken piece, and a photo of the part of the key you still have.
2. Which lock it is: building entry, mailbox, unit door, deadbolt or knob.
3. Whether the door is locked or open right now, and whether there is another way in.
4. Whether the key broke mid-turn or while going in.
5. Whether the lock is yours or the building's.
