Proving the car is yours

A new key can start the car, so have proof of ownership ready. Useful items:

• a photo ID
• the title or registration in your name; if they are locked inside the car, say so, since they can be checked once it is open
• the VIN, printed on the registration and on a plate at the base of the windshield on the driver's side
• for a leased or financed car, the lease or loan paperwork

Where the car is parked

Say exactly where the car sits: a driveway, a street space, a shared lot or a garage, with the level and space number. A car with no working key cannot be moved, which matters on Cincinnati's designated snow emergency routes, where a Snow Parking Restriction prohibits parking. Mention it if the car is on one of those streets. The city follows the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office snow emergency levels, so watch the level if you are arranging a visit in winter.

Getting the total in writing

Ohio Revised Code 1345.02(A) bars unfair or deceptive acts in consumer transactions, and Ohio Administrative Code 109:4-3-05 applies that to repairs and services, with estimate rights for many jobs. That rule excludes motor vehicle repair and service, so for car key work, ask for the total in writing before any work starts.
