Snow routes and a car you cannot open

Cincinnati follows the snow emergency levels set by the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office. During a Snow Parking Restriction, parking is prohibited on designated snow emergency routes, so a locked car on one of those streets is more pressing than the same car in a driveway or a garage. Say in your request that the car is on a snow route and whether a restriction is in effect.

At Level 3, travel is prohibited unless absolutely necessary, so if you are warm and safe and the car is legally parked, consider whether the lockout can wait until the level drops.

Frozen lock or real lockout?

A key that will not turn in an iced-up door lock is not always a lockout. The city's winter driving tips suggest de-icer for frozen locks; try that before leaning on the key, which can bend or break in the cylinder. If the keys are inside the car, or the fob is dead and the blade will not turn even after de-icing, request a car lockout visit.

Heat, cold and anyone inside

NOAA's summary for Ohio warns of dangerous heat index values when summer heat meets high humidity, and a closed car offers no relief from that. If a child, a pet or anyone who cannot get out alone is shut inside, call 911 first; that is a job for emergency services. Never leave a child or a pet in a parked car in any season. On a winter night, wait somewhere heated rather than beside the car.
