Do Columbus doors suit a smart lock?

Approvals in condo buildings and rentals

The Short North's newer condominium and mixed-use buildings can rise to ten stories or more. In one of them, the lobby and other shared entries may run on a system the building controls, and a smart lock on your unit does not connect to it. Condo rules may cover hardware that shows from a shared corridor, so check with the association before you buy.

Renters should check the lease for lock and key terms and get approval in writing before changing a door. If the lease says the landlord keeps a key, ask whether a code or the mechanical key satisfies it.

Winter, batteries and a backup key

In NOAA's Ohio summary, the winters of 2013-14 and 2014-15 averaged 18 nights at 0°F or lower, three times the state's usual six. Cold cuts battery output, and a keypad sits on the outside of the door. Replace batteries before winter rather than waiting for the low-battery warning, and keep the mechanical backup key on your ring or with a neighbor.
