Proving the car is yours

A new key both opens and starts a vehicle, so it helps to have proof that you own the car, or may use it, on hand before a key is cut or programmed. Have these ready:

• Photo ID with a name that matches the ownership papers
• The title or current registration issued by your state motor-vehicle agency
• For a leased or financed car, the lease or loan paperwork as well

If the car is registered to someone else, such as a parent or an employer, that person may need to be reachable to confirm it. If the registration is in the glove box of a locked car, mention it: a car lockout may come first.
