Eugene's business districts

Three parts of Eugene show how different commercial lock work can be.

• Downtown. The city center pairs the Hult Center for the Performing Arts with the Parcade and Overpark garages. A downtown job can involve a glass storefront door, a rear service door and an interior suite, so list each one. If the work falls on a show night, say so: the garages switch to Event Mode starting two hours before Hult Center showtimes.

• Whiteaker's nightlife district. Northwest of downtown, Whiteaker is also a nightlife district. Businesses that close late depend on whoever holds the closing keys, so a change in closing staff is the moment to check who still has a key.

Staff turnover and keys

Shift work makes keys drift. A former employee may still hold a copy, a manager's key may have been lent out, or nobody may know how many exist. A short routine keeps that manageable:

1. Keep a written list of who holds which key, and collect keys at a staff member's last shift. For a late-closing bar or restaurant, list the closing keyholders first.
2. Rekey when a key goes missing or a keyholder leaves without returning it, rather than waiting for a problem.
3. In a building shared by several tenants, rekey a suite between tenants. A master key system lets the owner open every suite while each tenant's key opens only its own.
4. Keep rear and service doors on the same schedule as the front door; they are easy to forget.
